Samba suffers racist abuse in Russia

Former Blackburn Rovers defender Chris Samba was subjected to racist abuse during Anzhi Mackhachkala's 1-0 defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow.

The 27-year-old was leaving the field when, only a month after moving to Russia, a banana was thrown onto the pitch.

Samba, whose children were in attendance, responded by throwing the object back from where it came.

"I am very sad that this happened in front of children who were sitting in the same stand," said the Congo international. "It is a really bad example for them."

"A banana came down at Samba from the VIP section, as the teams were leaving the field," an Anzhi spokesman later confirmed.

"Who threw it is unknown. Samba picked up the banana and threw it back. In our opinion this was the best and most appropriate response to those responsible."

Lokomotiv fans were also accused of racially abusing Peter Odemwingie after the Nigerian moved to West Bromwich Albion in August 2010.
